In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

IVF – in vitro fertilisation – is an artificial method of fertilisation in vitro (as above). Fertility medications are used to stimulate the development of multiple follicles in the ovaries. Then medications are used to stimulate the ovulation. Using general anaesthesia the ovums are aspirated (sucked) from follicles through the vagina with a special needle. In a laboratory they are placed into the special medium in the vial and then specially prepared sperm is injected. The vial is kept in an incubator at the corresponding temperature and humidity. 16-18 hours later it is evaluated to see whether fertilisation has occurred. Two-five days later the best embryos are transferred into the uterus.

The success of the procedure can be seen after two weeks. IVF is used for couples or patients who suffer from fallopian tube blockage due to the consequences of infectious diseases or undergone operations etc., those with increased endometriosis, ovary malfunction, unsuccessful past treatment, poor male sperm quality or when the cause of infertility is unclear. The number of the procedures is not restricted.
