Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus

Treatment for Nail Fungus using Candela GentleMaxPro Laser

Nail fungus is one of the most common nail disorders. Issues related to nail fungus are more commonly observed on toenails, but can also damage fingernails.  If nail fungus goes untreated, it can fungus spread to the surrounding areas (feet, calves, etc.) and cause problems which are typical of skin infections, such as an increase in sensitivity, itching, skin peeling and other related issues.

Typically, nail fungus is treated using local or systemic medicines or a combination of the two. Nowadays, however, innovative laser treatment for nail fungus is receiving an increasing amount of practical recommendations and scientific approval. This method can be used separately or in combination with other treatment methods. Laser treatment for nail fungus is completely safe and does not damage the surrounding tissues or nail nucleus. The laser delivers a beam of light onto the skin and affects only the causative agent.

At Northway Medical Centre in Klaipėda, we offer our patients the new-generation laser Candela GentleMaxPro CO2RE for nail fungus treatment.

What does the procedure involve?

Prior to the session, the nail fungus diagnosis must be confirmed by a microbiological and microscopic test. The patient and doctor should discuss all the available treatment methods.

The energy dispersed by the laser light is very important. When the energy reaches the area containing the fungus agents (nail nucleus), it transforms into heat and destroys them. The patient may feel a tingling sensation in the treated area, but there will be no strong feeling of  discomfort.

How many treatments do I need?

Typically, one nail laser treatment  lasts up to 3 minutes. Depending on the size of the damaged skin area, the course of treatment consists of 3–5 sessions every 4–6 weeks.
